"GEORGE TOWN: All hypermarkets, supermarkets, departmental stores, pharmacies, fast food restaurants, nasi kandar restaurants and convenience stores (including those at petrol stations) in the state will be asked to stop providing plastic shopping bags to customers from Jan 1 next year, the Penang State Assembly was told Tuesday.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the step was being taken to make Penang the first "green" state in the country.

"Feedback obtained from 73 players in the retail industry who took part in the state's 'no plastic bags' campaign from July 1, 2009, to Oct 26, 2010, showed a savings of 32,508,418 plastic shopping bags," he said when tabling the state's budget for next year.

He added that mini-markets and sole proprietorships would also be asked to enforce the ruling but for three days a week - Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. - Bernama"

I do so think that is so ridiculous..
This is so much going against the consumer's right ....
just imagine if ones go on shopping for many items.. then what???? by doing so of coz you somewhat safe the environment.. but how much???? and dont u know this will effect the economy and surely if u dont replace it something else then what... people just wont simply go to the shop and buy stuffs... then what? bankruptcy???

Think before doing anything.. dont jus tthink to make name for urself and no think in the interest of the public.
if only malaysia is doing this and not other major country wont it be the same... can u not compare the parameter or malaysia and other country.. the sizes the populations and others....

gosh im sooooooooo annoyed reading about this...

  1. I read your comments with mixed feelings. Over here, green enviro bags are encouraged and plastic bags are not given for less that 5 items. Green re-usable bags can be bought for $2. There was a trial in a large supermarket chain that plastic bags had to be bought for an additional $0.10 which was rather successful. The thing about Malaysians are, we tend to be rather lazy when considering the environment. Penang has taken it to extremes obviously but having environmental reusable bags just means less landfill and less rubbish.
