Tenom Attraction

TUGU ANTANOM @ TENOM

Tenom is a town located in Interior Division of Sabah, east Malaysia on the island of Borneo. The town was formerly called Fort Birch in the colonial period. Its population was estimated to be around 46,200 in the year 2000.

The principal ethnic groups are Murut (60%), followed by Chinese (20%), Malay (10%), and Kadazan-Dusun (8%). The area is primarily an agricultural zone, with soy beans, maize, vegetables and cacao the major crops. Tenom is one of Sabah's more scenic interior locations, with the Crocker Range towering impressively immediately behind town. It is also known as the "gateway to Murut country". The annual festival of the Murut community known as Pesta Kalimaran is held in Tenom.

In the center of Tenom is a statue to Ontoros Antonom (1885-1915), who led the Rundum Revolt of the Murut people against the British colonists in the Rundum District of Tenom in 1915.

The Sabah Agricultural Park (Lagud Sebrang Agriculture Research Station), the Tenom Orchid Centre and the Murut Cultural Center are located outside of town.

Tenom is the final stop for passengers on the North Borneo Railway.

During my first semester with UMS (University Malaysia Sabah) we did a social trip to Tenom under the supervision of our lecturer Mr. Lee Kuok Tiong. We also have had helped from YB Raimee, Tenom Parlimentarian and it was a very delightful and enjoyable visit there... Its my first time to actually visit such district in Sabah and i felt priviledged and honoured...

One of Tenom's attraction which is located in the middle of the city would be the Antanom Statue which is actually a warrior statue amongst the Murut ethnicity group.

From the plate that was placed underneath the statue its stated that ...
"The warrior statue represents the bravery and courage of the Murut people and in particular the hundres who together with their leader, Ontoros Antanom were killed in the great uprising against the Brisith at the Rundum's District in 1915. Those killed included Balayung, Ingkun, Anarus, Kalur, Angsakul, Singady, Linggam, Marantai, Impal, Lampang, Singkunan, Angkubus and Kuluntur.

Tenom's people are lovely indeed... and they are pretty much helpful as like to those in other districts that we've been to... A must visit place that is to those foreigner who decided to explore the Borneo..

Cheers
